Welcome to my blog! I am Rosie from MadexRosie and here is a little introduction about me.
I have always been a maker. As a young child I loved looking through rainy-day project books and "1001 things to make and do" books. My mum says that while my siblings would ask her for help, I would take myself off to the shelves full of craft supplies, help myself and get started on whatever project I was working on that day. I learnt how to knit with the help of my Granny and worked on trying to knit clothes for my toys. I remember cutting out patches to fix the holes in my jeans and used to love going to the fabric shop with my mum whenever she needed to make new curtains or sofa covers.
When I was about 14 or 15 I dreamed that one day I would own a wedding dress shop where I could design and make wedding dresses all day. I still see making a wedding dress as the ultimate project! I loved doing textiles at school (I always seemed to be making something completely different to everyone else) but it wasn't an option for sixth form at my school. I didn't want to move schools so my love of sewing was side-lined for a bit, and it was only when I went to Uni that I picked it up again and started making my own clothes. I was given an old sewing machine by my Godmother just before I started uni so I took that with me. I started uni with a sewing machine but without a laptop so I guess that shows where my priorities really were!
I happily sewed my way through uni (studying Childhood Studies at Bristol), teaching myself how to make my own clothes, sewing dresses for various formal events, tracing round my clothes on greaseproof paper and trying to recreate my favourite garments. I had varying degrees of success with these early experiments but I always told myself to learn from my mistakes and take these lessons with me into my next creation.
After uni I started working at a nursery in Bristol while I tried to work out what I wanted to do with my career. I ended up loving it and staying there for the next three years. Towards the end of 2016 I started toying with the idea of moving on from the nursery, considering various childcare related careers as I love working with children. Once the idea of opening my own shop popped into my head it was impossible to let it go, so over Christmas I decided that I would take the plunge and make my dreams a reality. After talking about it for years I realised that "one day" wouldn't come unless I made it happen. So I quit my job and created MadexRosie. I love having the time and space to make all the ideas floating around in my head a reality, being able to bring my talents out into the world and bring happiness to others through my creations. I am excited that something I have been dreaming about since I was a child is starting to become a reality. I feel like I am starting on my journey to reaching my goals and achieving my dreams.
